HHFD Training
The Hasbrouck Heights Fire Department conducted exercises on
September 22, 2002 in a Jefferson Avenue house slated for demolition.
The maneuvers scheduled included (1) Search and rescue, (2) Hose training and (3) Venting
roof. Three trainers carefully briefed and supervised the maneuvers to insure
full personal safety through the exercises.
During search and rescue exercises in full turn out gear weighing 60 pounds -- wax
paper covered the masks to limit visibility and simulate smoke conditions. A
40 pound "dummy" dressed in in firefighters turnout gear to include Scott pack,
was hidden in the attic. The goal was to methodically go through the course until the
victim was rescued, regularly informing command of their location and maintaining constant
communications with their partner.
A hose connection was made to the pumper with firefighters poised at the front door.
Wax paper covered their mask to simulate smoke. The hose was then carried to
the second floor to extinguish a "fire" in the attic -- and also to
simulate "hose venting" of smoke. Each section of hose weights 90 pounds.
Several firefighters cut venting holes in the roof while the instructor provided
information about some of the dangers they may face.
