256 Attend Potter Party

At the stroke of 12:01 a.m., before a crowd of 256 eager readers at the Free Public Library of Hasbrouck Heights, J.K. Rowling’s final volume in her Harry Potter series was released to the sound of excited cheering. The long-awaited “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” is sure to be an instant classic and enjoyed for many years to come. The Library’s Harry Potter Party and Book Sale was the place to be, where Muggles and Wizard wanna-bes of all ages came in droves on July 20th from 9:30 p.m. till 2 a.m.

Upon entering and being greeted, each guest was sorted into one of the 4 Hogwarts Houses—Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff, or Ravenclaw. Party goers of all ages were treated to numerous activities: trivia contests, craft sessions making Mad-eye Moody eyes and scratch art etchings, in addition to balloon making, face painting and a screening of two Harry Potter films.

In keeping with the Harry Potter theme, a wide variety of delectable snacks were available. These included two flowing chocolate fountains, dragon scale crisps (potato chips), Scabber’s hearts (strawberries), blast-ended skrewt tails (pineapple chunks with marshmallows), non-poisonous mushroom caps (vanilla wafers) all enjoyed with a refreshing chilled blue blood (berry juice) punch.

During the course of the evening, prizes were raffled off to lucky participants. Among the prizes were a plush Monster Book of Monsters, computer games of the World of Harry Potter, a lovely stuffed version of Fawkes the Phoenix, a Hedwig puppet, light up magic wands, Gryffindor scarves, a Sorting Hat, and soundtracks from the different Harry Potter movies.

The Friends of the Library sold over 120 copies of the final installment of the famous boy wizard. The proceeds from the book sale go to support future library programs.
As participants departed from their magical evening at the Library, they were handed either an edible magic wand or a chocolate frog as a special thank you for attending. A truly wonderful time was had by all! Story by Mimi Hui ###
