Press Release
On Friday, July 2, 1999, the Hasbrouck Heights Lions Club will sponsor the 16th Annual spectacular fireworks display and concert featuring the Big Band Sound of the 17 piece Somers Dream Orchestra, at the Depken Field (Route 17 and Franklin Avenue).

The Concert is scheduled to start at 8:00 p.m.. Lawn seating permitted. The concert will feature the Somers Dream Orchestra playing the lush Big Band sounds of the 30’s and 40’s with true swing era authenticity in instrumentation. This 17 piece band features four-part harmonies and rich orchestrations of beautiful melodies as originally written, scored and recorded by legendary performers such as Harry James, Count Basie, Benny Goodman, Gene Krupa, Arti Shaw, Tommy Dorsey, etc. This renowned ensemble is directed by John Somers on trumpet, and includes five saxophones and/or clarinets, three trombones, four trumpets, piano, electric guitar, base guitar, drums and vocalists.

A brief program is scheduled at 8:30 p.m. beginning with the Color Guard from VFW Post 4591, the Pledge of Allegiance lead by the Girl Scouts, the National Anthem and an Invocation by Fr. Raymond Holmes of Corpus Christi Church. Mayor William J. Torre will welcome the community to the festivities. Assemblywoman Rose Marie Heck will speak briefly, and then make a presentation to the VFW for their 100th Year Anniversary. In addition, prizes will be awarded by the Hasbrouck Heights Police Department Memorial Day Bike Marathon cosponsored by Bill Kundert of Kundert Volvo. After these ceremonies, the concert will continue until the on-site 50-50 drawing at approximately 9:20 p.m..

The fireworks are scheduled to begin at 9:30 p.m.. The pyrotechnic contractor International Fireworks is operated by the Serpico Family formerly of Hasbrouck Heights and is the same contractor the Lions Club has used for 15 years.

These fireworks are even more fabulous because of the generous contributions of the corporate sponsors: Bergen Commercial Bank, Holiday Inn, International House of Pancakes, Kearny Federal Savings, Kundert Volvo, Lovey’s Pizzeria & Restaurant, and Michael Dodge. The advance ticket sales & gate fee pay for this event, but it’s the sponsors who provide the EXTRA FIREWORKS for a spectacular show!

The concessions tent will be provided by Russ Schroeder from Taylor Rental of Ridgewood, NJ. The HH Ambulance Corp will provide free blood pressure checks. Sheriff Joseph L. Ciccone is providing additional manpower.

Handicap entrance is located at the Franklin Avenue and Route 17 gate. A limited number of parking spaces have been "reserved" near the Franklin Avenue entrance.

Admission is $5 at the gate, children under 5 free. Advance ticket sales are $3 and available at many select Boulevard merchants and professionals.

Rain date is Monday, July 5 with an extended rain date of Friday, July 9. Rain call is 288-3373. Additional information is available at: www.hasbrouck-heights.com/fire/htm. The event is sponsored by the Hasbrouck Heights Lions Club, Inc. serving the community since 1931.

A Standing In Memoriam
... to our good friend Ellsworth Barthen who for many years, delighted us all with his portrayal of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Many of us can recall with great fidelity his first grand entrance to the Fireworks Program in 1988 when he arrived in a 1923 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost -- Phaeton* while the band played Hail to the Chief. He was a regular on the Joe Franklin Show, appeared many times on the Aircraft Carrier Intrepid during military memorial services, as well as other prestigious engagements.   His special talents will be greatly missed by this community.
